Basic Information

If you get your health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you may be eligible for the premium tax credit. This tax credit can help make purchasing health insurance coverage more affordable for people with moderate incomes. Each year the Health Insurance Marketplace has an open enrollment period.  The open enrollment period to purchase health care insurance for 2015 ran from Nov. 15, 2014, through Feb. 15, 2015.

Eligibility

In general, you may be eligible for the credit if you meet all of the following:

  • buy health insurance through the Marketplace;
  • are ineligible for coverage through an employer or government plan;
  • are within certain income limits;
  • do not file a Married Filing Separately tax return (unless you meet criteria which allows certain victims of domestic abuse and spousal abandonment to claim the premium tax credit using the Married Filing Separately filing status); and
  • cannot be claimed as a dependent by another person.

If during enrollment, you are eligible for the credit, you can choose to:

  • Get It Now: have some or all of the estimated credit paid in advance directly to your insurance company to lower what you pay out-of-pocket for your monthly premiums; or
  • Get It Later: wait to get all of the credit when you file your tax return.

During enrollment the Marketplace will use information you provide about your projected income and family composition for the year to estimate the amount of the premium tax credit you will be able to claim on your tax return.

You will then decide whether you want to have all, some or none of your estimated credit paid in advance directly to your insurance company.

Claiming the Credit on Your Federal Tax Return

If you chose to have advance credit payments sent to your insurer, you must file a federal income tax return, even if otherwise not required to file.  Form 8962 Premium Tax Credit (PTC) must be completed to claim the premium tax credit and reconcile your advance credit payments with the premium tax credit you are eligible to claim on your return. If the amount is less than the actual premium tax credit, you will get the difference as a higher refund or lower tax due. If the advance credit payments that were paid to your health care provider were more than the actual credit, you may need to pay the difference with your tax return.

If you enrolled in coverage through the Marketplace but didn’t get the benefit of advance credit payments during 2014, if eligible, you may claim the premium tax credit when you file your return.

If you purchased coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace you should receive Form 1095-A,Health Insurance Marketplace Statement from your Marketplace by early February. This form provides information needed to complete Form 8962.

You can also use the IRS’ interactive tool, Am I eligible to claim the Premium Tax Credit?, to find out if you are eligible.

Join Parent Xpress, Mommysitting and CityTot for an afternoon of fun and meet other New York moms.

 Are you ready to fully enjoy Spring? This winter has been so so so rude, that we all need some sun. And as moms, many of us stayed too much inside hibernating like bears. We need to get a tan, but most of all, us and our little ones need a Meetup and a playdate!

So save the date on April 25th because there will be a big moms meetup in Central Park!

Here are more details:

  • What? A New York moms Meetup around a picnic in Central Park.
  • How? Every mom will bring something to eat and/or drink (to share). No alcohol of course. And will bring their own picnic towel.
  • Who? New York moms, kids, and dads.
  • Where? At “Great Hill” in Central Park. It is easy to access on 106th street, not far from the train station on 103rd St (B,C trains) and it has public restrooms (great for kids).
  • When? On April 25, 2015 at 11am.

We can’t wait! It’s gonna be a great day, we can feel it! So don’t forget your sunglasses! And bring moms friends that you know! The more we are, the more fun it will be!

Lamb broth and soup

This winter we are on a roll getting our health back together. It has been cold for a couple of days and I wanted soup. When you are clean eating, trying to find a soup at the grocery store or a starter soup mix is very disappointing because not all items are Non-GMO. Lately, my grocery store runs feel like a field trip, because I’m always learning different things at each store.  I wanted to make my lamb broth and soup as clean as possible. Here’s what I learned last week about the vegetable and fruits. Such as how to read the fruit and vegetable labels at the store. Some stores will have them on their fruit and veggies and some will not.

  1. If there are only four numbers in the PLU, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides. The last four letters of the PLU code are simply what kind of vegetable or fruit. An example is that all bananas are labeled with the code of 4011.
  2. If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “8″, this tells you that the item is a genetically modified fruit or vegetable. Genetically modified fruits and vegetables trump being organic. So, it is impossible to eat organic produce that is grown from genetically modified seeds. A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011
  3. If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “9″, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is not genetically modified. An organic banana would be: 94011

Note to self: when I eat like crap! I feel like CRAP!!! RT if you agree

Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22, 2015.

Since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, over 20 million Americans have participated, helping to improve the quality of air we breathe and the water we drink. In addition, landmark legislation has been passed to help support this effort, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.

The New York State Senate takes this opportunity to celebrate the great strides New York has made in helping to improve our environment. From expanding the bottle bill to promoting green energy, New York is helping to make a difference.

To celebrate and honor Earth Day this year, the New York State Senate is sponsoring a poster contest for children in grades K – 6. The theme of our Earth Day celebration is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” I have enclosed a set of posters to display in your school and a detailed description of the competition. Please feel free to copy this information and pass it along to your teachers.

Entries should be photographed and submitted electronically, preferably in jpeg or pdf format via online here. All submissions must be uploaded to the web-site by April 6, 2015.

All entries will be displayed on my website, with the winning poster being featured. Participants will also receive a certificate acknowledging their participation.

Students are encouraged not only to be creative in their project, but also to convey a real commitment to making the environment a better place. By educating students about the importance of recycling, they will learn to be creative in solving the problem of solid waste.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my coordinator for this event, Cynthia Thomas at 518.455.2520 or Michael Broderick at 518.455.2124. I hope you and your students will participate in this year’s New York State Senate Earth Day Celebration.
